THIS MAN WHO FEEDS STRAY CATS IN SYRIA EACH DAY IS PROOF THERE CAN STILL BE ROOM FOR CARING AND COMPASSION IN THE FACE OF EXTREME VIOLENCE Milo SumnerCONTRIBUTOR by Milo Sumner in New Photography on Friday 26 September 2014 8720260 Even in the midst of horror and violence, if you look close enough, you can find gems of human compassion to help restore your faith in mankind. A perfect example of these shining moments is the story of a Syrian man who has been taking care of abandoned domestic pets. Alaa is an ambulance driver living in Aleppo, the largest city in Syria. Every day he spends the equivalent of $4 worth of raw meat and drives to Masaken Hanano, a district of Aleppo that has now become uninhabited as a result of catastrophic shelling by forces loyal to Al-Assad. Living in the neighbourhood are hundreds of cats who, like Masaken Hanano, have been abandoned by their owners. Alaa has been caring for the animals for over two months, under his own initiative and out of the goodness of his own heart. The cats are not strays but were once domestic pets and so the majority of them lack the ability to adequately feed and fend for themselves. Without Alaa many of them would surely die.
