THIS OCT ARTICLE IN THE IRISHMIRROR ON THE ECOLOGICAL DISASTER OF SELLAFIELD ... reminds me of what inspired my environmental assemblage series (PACIFIC SERIES) using the red skerrie savers as my signature piece ... In 1996 I went to Ireland for a family reunion where I discovered that my family name “Lynch,” means “Descendant of Loingseach,” meaning “mariner,” from “Long” for “ship or mariner.” I also discovered the “red skerrie savers” in a small coastal town Skerries, Ireland along the Irish Sea. These bright, beautiful skerrie savers dot the shoreline of this sweet beach town like red framed bird houses each holding a lifesaver to throw out into the sea to swimmers in trouble. It was there that I met an Irish family who live on the beach but they say they don’t go near the water or let their children go swimming in the ocean because it’s polluted – in fact it’s the most polluted ocean in the world they said because of Sellafield British nuclear reprocessing plants which are discharging thousands of gallons of radioactive waste daily from the British shore into the Irish Sea. It was one of the saddest days of my life discovering that the Irish Sea would never recover from this ecological disaster. irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/health-news/sellafield-safety-shocker-nuclear-waste-4538648
