THIS OUR INCREDIBLE AFRICA: The Africa Union just concluded its 22nd Summit- where our Heads of State & governments came together to discuss our future. The theme was AGRICULTURE & FOOD SECURITY. This is in accordance with the declaration of 2014 as Year of Agriculture in Africa by these same Heads of States in 2012. This is where it gets interesting: The AU just released the summary of the KEY DECISIONS from the summit. And believe it or not, there is no mention of, let alone any decision on FOOD SECURITY or AGRICULTURE. Not one. [I hope its an error from the Rapporteur] How can we engage more actively/ constructively with our regional & sub-regional institutions? Are you familiar with any case studies of how citizens or local institutions have successfully channeled their input through their govts at the AU level? [For instance, Ghanas main proposal to this AU Heads of State Summit on Agric & Food Security was interestingly to adopt Encyclopaedia Africana Project- even though there is a raging debate nationally on issues of food security/ food sovereignty? Was there any attempt by civil society to make any inputs into the summit deliberations/decision through our govt] I am proud of the greater civil society engagement during AU summits in recent years, plz share any resources available on the real impacts of these engagement...*M
