THIS REALLY TOUCHED A NERVE A number of you very innocently, and having no knowledge of its ramifications, mentioned in reference to my previous post about racism, that I must have had good parents. Do NOT let that one incident fool you. I had caretakers, NOT parents. They fed me, clothed me, and put a roof over my head. The state would have provided the same. They totally ignored my feelings of hurt, isolation, fear, depression, self-doubt, loneliness and the worst – constant anxiety. Early in childhood, I stopped going to my mother to express any emotional distress. I knew exactly how she would respond. She would not even let me finish, before blurting out, Raymond, just keep telling yourself, ‘This too shall pass. I cant tell you how often as a child and even a young teenager, I repeated those words to myself, no longer needing my mothers advice. I had no idea that I was being emotionally abused, I thought the problems were my fault, and that I deserved this lack of concern. My father was a man with a permanent scowl on his face. A man who never tussled my hair. I never even considered approaching him. Even in their graves, I dont want them to receive any undue credit. I implore all parents, please do not ignore your childs feelings. Listen and share not only their sadness, but their joy as well.
