THIS Sat Aug 23 5pm-10pm, a FREE concert event in Downtown Knoxville ! Preservation Pub Presents: International Music Day on Historic Market Square, Knoxville Freetown, where all of the musicians that would eventually form Sierra Leones Refugee All Stars lived at the time, was relatively untouched by the bloody civil war that killed millions, until January 6, 1999, when rebels attacked the city as part of a campaign they called “Operation Kill Every Living Thing.” The attack on Freetown caused a panicked mass exodus with thousands of civilians fleeing the region and eventually making their way into neighboring Guinea, some ending up in refugee camps... this is where the Al-Stars were formed... Sierra Leones Refugee All Stars return to the site of their very first show in the Land of the Free for a FREE show, with very special guests Marina Orchestra and The Theorizt. The world-renowned Sierra Leones Refugee All-Stars are a band whose story captivated the world, and whose very first concert in the United States took place right here on Historic Market Square, Knoxville ... way back in 2005, when the All-Stars were very new to world-touring... to the point that Bernadette West enjoyed their company for an entire week in her home (and Bernadette had the good fun and fortune to teach Black Nature-- the bands hip hop specialist-- how to drive). Almost a decade later Sierra Leones Refugee All-Stars return to Market Square, where they will be joined under the William Lyons Pavilion by Knoxvilles High Life 8-piece band, Marina Orchestra, and the positive full band hip hop of The Theorizt. Festivities begin promptly at 5pm, when the taps turn on. Come early and enjoy the Market Square Farmers Market by 9am-2pm. International Music Day on Historic Market Square, Knoxville primary sponsorship support comes from Cherokee Distributing Company, Coors Light, Redds Apple Ale, Sam Adams Brewery and Blue Moon Brewing Company Sponsorship as always by our best friends at Blank Newspaper, The Daily Times Weekend section Metro Pulse, WUTK The Rock, WDVX and i105 WFIV !
