THIS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 4: PLEASE STAND WITH FAST FOOD WORKERS AS THEY GO ON STRIKE AND ESCALATE THE FIGHT FOR A FAIR ECONOMY! Over the last year and a half, fast-food workers have joined together and gone on strike. These actions have successfully brought the problem of poverty wage jobs into the national consciousness and provoked a national debate over why so many jobs don’t pay Americans enough to survive. The fastest growing jobs in the United States are also the lowest paid: Fast food provides an increasing share of our new jobs, but workers are paid between $10,000 and $18,000 / year– less than half what it costs to support a family in our city. Fast food workers in the United States and in countries across the world are not paid enough to afford basic needs like food, clothing, and rent. They qualify for food stamps and other public assistance—$7 billion a year worth—which means that big, profitable corporations are forcing taxpayers to subsidize their low wages and burdening our economy, which hurts communities across the country.
