THIS WEEK AT UUCR Fri, Dec 5, 7 PM at Fountain Park in Chestertown -- A Vigil to pay respect and raise awareness to / of recent events in Ferguson, Missouri -- and to create dialog in our community. UUCRs Social Justice and Concerns Committee will provide the hand-held candles to be used at this event and we will bring our Standing on the Side of Love banner. Sunday Service, Dec 7, 10 AM -- Chaplain James Gibbons Walker, The Barmen Declaration. In 1934, representatives of the Lutheran, Reformed and Evangelical United denominations met in Barmen, Germany. They met to oppose the so-called German Christians, a Nazi supported group that sought to reinterpret Christianity as an Aryan religion. The statement they produced, the Barmen Declaration, reaffirmed that the German Church was not an organ of the State and that the concept of State control over the Church was doctrinally false. Now, eighty years later, James Gibbons Walker invites reflection on the relationship between faith and society in an increasingly pluralistic and contentious USA. Following a career as a psychiatric social worker, James Gibbons Walker has engaged in theological education at the Ecumenical Institute of Theology of St. Marys Seminary and University in Baltimore, and in service to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Southern Maryland as their chaplain. James received a Master of Arts in Theology degree from the E.I. in May, 2014. Important Note: This week the Worship Committee will introduce the monthly practice, Sharing Our Stories, in our Sunday service. Susan Brittain will initiate this practice by sharing the story of her personal spiritual search, which ultimately led to UUCR. (And arent we grateful!) This is a wonderful way to learn more about each other and grow our beloved community. We hope you will join us to hear the stories, and to give them! Religious Education for youngsters as well as childcare for infants and toddlers will be provided during the service.
