THIS WEEK IN THE STRUGGLE( A weekly look at topics, issues and personalities in The Struggle)VOL.#1 One good thing about evil politicians is that they forcibly raise the political consciousness of their peoples. Inadvertently, they make their peoples cognizant of the labyrinths of the politics of their nations , the actions and pronouncements of their politicians, the various items on their nations political agenda and the ramifications of all these. Once a peoples political consciousness starts to rise, there is no turning back, though there may be huddles to navigate along the way. The Gambia cannot be an exception in this regard. The softly-softly strategy of The Jawara regime; and the blatantly dictatorial agenda of the Jammeh dictatorship are the realities that are responsible for the current level of our political consciousness. The polarization that the dictatorship is causing on one hand is generating activities on the other which are not only undermining its success but are also generating conceptualizations of alternatives. The decimation of freedom of expression in the country and the monopolization of all major media outlets by the state, which has been reduced to an extension of the one-man dictatorship, is the force behind the proliferation of independent online media outlets amongst diaspora Gambians. The extent of the clampdown on free speech in The Gambia is such that national issues are better discussed amongst diaspora Gambians than even within the countrys Parliament: a mere rubberstamp for the dictatorship. CRACKS ON THE WALL To live in groups and consequently pursue all kinds of social formations is a fundamental trait of the human species. Persons who view politics through moralistic lenses have always been flabbergasted by the possibilities of people gravitating towards the centers of dictatorships. In The Gambia we always hear sighs across the board when supposedly intelligent people accept positions within the brass of the dictatorship. We always gravitate toward dictatorships or other outfits of decadence for other reasons and not the moralistic. Thus when persons join such horrible outfits judging them on moral basis can the misleading in the sense that it was not such notions that motivated them in the first place. It has therefore been interesting to observe this week how people react to both Ebou Jallows revelations of high level corruption within the dictatorship, and colonel Samsudeem Sarrs apparent expression of desires to be back with the regime. Ebou Jallows revelations are only significant in the sense that theyre like from the horses mouth this time. Within the two year period that the regime was in place as a military dictatorship, it is public knowledge that it obtained $US35 from Taiwan and $US100 from Libya. These were all loans taken on behalf of Gambian tax payers, but we cannot see on the ground anything in terms of socioeconomic development within the same period which justifiably explains where all that money had gone. Colonel Sarrs tomfoolery on the other hand is a huge validation of The Struggle. Whether colonel Sarr joins the regime again or not, he is worth nothing to the nation of his birth any more. He has publicly expressed lack of interest in his country of origin in preference to his current home. From the reasons he has proffered one can easily deduce that his loyalty to The Gambia was only guaranteed as long as the country was providing his material needs and those of his family. But both colonel Sarr and Ebou Jallow were insiders of the regime and had occupied ministerial positions. In both developments only the dictatorship looses and The Struggle gains maximally. Ebou Jallow after having made a patch-up with the dictatorship is again out there talking against them. A crack in the wall of The A(F)PRC dictatorship! Colonel Sarr on the other hand has discredited himself so horrendously in very few words, that the need for perpetual scrutiny of our public servants, and anyone who partakes in the public space, particularly in regard of their loyalties to the sovereign people of The Gambia, cannot be exaggerated. The mess is all about The Jammeh dictatorship, while The Struggle stands up and above it all!
