THIS WEEK IN WEATHER HISTORY (NOV.30- DEC.06) -NOV.30,1911: Daily record low temperature 15˚F was set at Lufkin, TX. This is also the lowest temperature ever recorded in the month of November at Lufkin. -NOV.30,1979: Daily record low temperature 20˚F was set at Longview, TX. This ties the lowest temperature ever recorded in the month of November at Longview. -NOV.30,1996: A F1 tornado touched down in De Soto Parish, LA in the town of Gloster. Four homes suffered minor damage including a mobile home that was completely blown away. A tractor trailor was tossed around as well. Several trees were twisted off including one tree that was tossed through the roof of a home. -NOV.30,1996: A F2 tornado touched down in Lincoln Parish, LA in the town of Simsboro, LA. The tornado killed 2 men while injuring another as a tree fell across the cab of their truck while installing a radio. Nine people were injured. The tornado did minor damage to 33 homes, one was completely destroyed. Several mobile homes and one local church suffered major damage. The tornado struck the Ball-Foster Glass Container factory near I-20 knocking out brick walls and flipping 18 wheel trailers adjacent to the factory. As the tornado moved across I-20 several wrecks occurred including a tractor trailer which jackknifed into a ditch -NOV.30,2009: Calion, AR, Union County: Excessive heavy rainfall that fell during the middle and latter half of October resulted in very high river levels on the Ouachita River at Felsenthal, Arkansas. Most of the communities residents had to move to higher ground as water was reported in as many as 15 homes with many city streets flooded and closed. Upwards of 14 homes in the Calion area were inundated by flood waters. Union County, Arkansas was declared a Federal Disaster Area. -DEC.1,1983: A F2 tornado touched down in Monroe, LA destroying 12 homes and damaging 125 additional buildings. The most severe damage occurred to a government housing project where all 90 buildings sustained moderate damage. Ten injuries were reported, but all were indicated to be minor. -DEC.3,1953: A tornado destroyed a home 10 miles south of Mansfield, LA in De Soto Parish. Three people were injured. -DEC.3,1953: A strong tornado formed southwest of Alexandria, LA and moved 75 miles NE through Grant, Winn, and La Salle Parishes in the towns of Dry Prong and Tullos. Two deaths and 15 injuries occurred in the town of Tullos, five injuries in Grant Parish, and three injuries in Winn Parish. In total there were 9 deaths and 53 injuries with this storm. -DEC.3,1973: A tornado touched down in Columbia County, AR in the town of Waldo. Several businesses were destroyed or severely damaged. One person was injured by flying glass while working in a dairy barn. -DEC.3,1978: Several strong tornadoes moved through the area including a F4 tornado that touched down in Bossier City. Five people were killed and over 250 people were injured. -DEC.4,1953: A tornado touched down in Union Parish, LA in the town Spearsville, LA. One home and three outbuildings were destroyed, and several others were damaged. Sixteen people were injured. -DEC.4,1953: A tornado touched down in Union Parish, LA in the community of Spencer. Over a dozen homes were destroyed. Eleven people were injured. -DEC.4,2009: On Friday December 4th, an early December snow storm struck the southern portions of our region. This occurred as a strong upper level disturbance helped to induce a low pressure system over the northwest Gulf of Mexico. Light snow fell along the Interstate 20 corridor from Tyler, TX to Monroe, LA, but no accumulation occurred. The heaviest snow fell in southern Sabine, Natchitoches, Grant and La Salle Parishes in Louisiana were 0.5 to 1.0 inches of snow fell. -DEC.5-7,2013: Freezing rain and sleet fell across the region. Ice accumulation exceeded 1/4 inch in SE Oklahoma and was mainly less than 1/4 inch in SW Arkansas and NE Texas. This resulted in accumulation on bridges and overpasses, trees and powerlines. Some traffic accidents were noted during the height of the winter weather along with a few power outages.
