THIS WEEK IN WEATHER HISTORY (OCT.26TH - NOV.1ST) -OCT.27,1980:A F3 tornado touched down in the town of Pleasant Hill in Sabine Parish, Louisiana. One barn and house under construction was torn to pieces. A garage was pushed down and a patio roof was taken off a home. A 2x4 was driven through a roof to the floor of a kitchen in a home and a huge pine tree was uprooted in a front yard. No injuries were reported. -OCT.28,1974:A small tornado flattened one barn and did considerable damage to 2 others at Turner Dairy in Minden, LA. The tops of pine trees were snapped at the Methodist camp. -OCT.27,1957:A daily record low temperature was set at the following locations: Lufkin, TX (30˚F), Texarkana, AR (30˚F), Tyler, TX (30˚F), Longview, TX (32˚F) Monroe, LA (32˚F), Shreveport, LA (33˚F), -OCT.28,1957:A daily record low temperature was set at the following locations: Tyler, TX (27˚F), Lufkin, TX (29˚F), Longview, TX (29˚F), Monroe, LA (29˚F), Shreveport, LA (31˚F), -OCT.31,1941:A daily record rainfall of 7.33 inches was set at Lufkin,TX. -OCT.31,1974:A F1 tornado touched down in the town of Bradley in Lafayette County, AR. The tornado damaged the Bradley Elementary School, ripping the roofs from the language, arts, and mathematics rooms. Several automobiles near the school were damaged. Also, an aircraft at the local airport was damaged. -OCT.31,1993:A daily record low temperature was set at the following locations: Lufkin, TX (25˚F), Longview, TX (25˚F), El Dorado, AR (26˚F), Shreveport, LA (28˚F), Monroe, LA (30˚F). -October 2009 was one of the wettest Octobers on record in terms of precipitation areawide. Many areas received 10-16 inches of additional rainfall above their normal average. -NOV.01,1993: A daily record low temperature was set at the following locations: El Dorado, AR (24˚F), Longview, TX (26˚F), Shreveport, LA (27˚F), Monroe, LA (27˚F), Lufkin, TX (28˚F). -NOV.1,1977:A tornado touched down in Bowie County, TX on the west side of the town of Hooks. Considerable roof, power line, and tree damage was done. Another home in town was damaged. The roof of that home was blown away and several exterior walls were downed. The roof was found ¼ miles away near the interstate highway. No one was injured. -HEAVY RAIN & SEVERE WEATHER (OCT.29TH-30TH) On the early morning hours of the 29th, showers and thunderstorms became more numerous ahead of the cold front. The National Weather Service in Shreveport issued the first Tornado Warning of the event at around 1 pm on the 29th. The tornadic portion of this event lasted through the remainder of the day and continued into the late evening. Flash flooding became a problem by the late afternoon of the 29th, as the thunderstorms continued to move over the same areas repeatedly. As the cold front began moving through the region, the tornadic threat transitioned into a full-blown flash flooding event. The cold front stalled over Deep East Texas, Northwest Louisiana, and Southwest Arkansas during the overnight hours heading into the 30th. Widespread flash flooding was reported across areas of East Texas, Southwest Arkansas, and North Louisiana during this time. All said and done, the region received anywhere from one to eight inches of rainfall, with widespread totals of five to six inches across Deep East Texas, Southern Arkansas, and North/Northwest Louisiana. Record daily rainfall totals occurred at Lufkin, TX (5.58in.), Shreveport, LA (5.88in.), and El Dorado, AR (3.97in) on the 29th and Monroe, LA( 3.39in) on the 30th. Damage was reported in East Texas in Panola, Bowie, and Angelina Counties, in Southwest Arkansas in Little River, Lafayette, Columbia, and Union Counties, and in North Louisiana in Bossier, Caddo, Union, and Red River Parishes. The most extensive damage occurred in the Shreveport/Bossier City area, with numerous homes and businesses sustaining moderate to significant damage.
