THOMPSON LEGISLATION TO NAME JACKSON COURTHOUSE AFTER CIVIL RIGHTS ATTORNEY PASSES HOUSE I am pleased with the House’s action to pass H.R. 579. R. Jess brown was a legendary attorney who challenged Jim Crow era laws which violated the civil rights of African-Americans. Jess Brown was a trailblazer for justice and was on the front line of the fight to change Mississippi’s discriminatory laws. Brown filed the first civil suit on behalf of an African-American in Mississippi and advocated for many notable civil rights pioneers including Clyde Kennard, James Meredith, Medgar Wiley Evers and Dr. Aaron Henry. I am happy to honor R. Jess Brown for his lifetime of leadership and service to our state and to the fight for civil rights. I commend my colleagues in the House on passage of this bill and urge action before the conclusion of this session of Congress in the Senate.
