THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Despite the current trend to raise children to believe that there are no winners or losers and that every kid should have a chance at being the team captain and that it is unfair if your team loses by a big score, it is wrong and harmful to our posterity. There are always losers. There are always leaders and followers and not all followers qualify to be leaders. It is no disgrace when a better team scores more goals than a poor one. Never being a loser or a team captain and believing that winning does not matter just so you played does not mirror life. Excessive concern for childrens self-esteem does not prepare them for the future in which they will have to earn esteem. Neither does promoting children through the school system without their having demonstrated that they learned something during the school year. For some children, learning math. grammar, history, civics, music and art are hard. But children need to work at it even if it interferes with play time or socialization or they fail tests of what they have learned. Children will always protest about homework. But they have to know that if they havent learned their lessons, they will not be promoted. Let them know that failure is no disgrace but an opportunity to do better. Kids need to learn the pleasure and satisfaction of solving problems, not just dodging the difficult ones. Think of all the things that Edison failed at before he achieved success with the light bulb. And think of Teslas struggle to bring alternating current to its present dominant state. They werent concerned with self-esteem, but only with accomplishing their goals.
