THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Sunday 7th September 2014 Why should the people of Sierra Leone be dependent on foreign aid packages to tackle the current Ebola crisis? Maybe part of the answer can be found in the years of inept and corrupt government by both sides of the party political divide which has caused the almost complete collapse of the public health system in Sierra Leone, leaving noble health professionals (doctors and nurses) without access to even the most basic tools and resources to enable them to effectively treat those with Ebola, prevent it spreading to others and protect themselves and the general population. The current government should be hanging its head in utter shame, and the people of Sierra Leone should be looking at a real alternative to the political status quo, one which puts freedom, fairness and social justice for ordinary people above all else. A system that translates into proper public health facilities, adequate sanitation, access to education, quality housing, better transportation - and the list goes on. All the people of Sierra Leone deserve and desire better than successive governments, underpinned (or should that be undermined) by foreign aid packages, have so far delivered.
