THOUGHT FOR THE NIGHT. Most people think that lawyering is easy, that society does not really need lawyers, and that whatever it is that lawyers do, they can very well do on their own. They think that lawyering is just a matter of ink and paper, and that because of this, lawyers do not really deserve to be paid. Well, if lawyering is easy, then I encourage EVERYONE to go to law school, suffer 4 years of grilling, gruelling readings, and humiliation, and then pass the ultimate exam which is the Philippine bar, so that when he gets into trouble someday, he can handle his own case and represent himself in the courts of law. Lets see how many will actually make it. Lawyers are not professionals. The way things are today, we are mostly charitable institutions. And unless our patience runs out, like mine did tonight, we do not really complain. So please, spare us the contempt. If you cannot at least be grateful for our contribution, you can at least acknowledge that we do have a role in society that noone else can play. Wake up, people! If society did not need us, the profession would have died a long time ago. Stop the delusion. It is time to get real.
