THOUGHT FOR TODAY... William Wilberforce devoted 30 years of his life to the abolition of the slave trade throughout the British Empire. Such dedication to an uphill task is uncommon, to say the least. Wilberforce’s campaign was not just a good idea; it was, he insisted, a calling from the Lord. Eugene Peterson once described the life of faith as “a long obedience in the same direction.” Wilberforce certainly demonstrated that kind of obedience to what he believed to be a divine calling. He stayed the course, arguing and arguing, organizing and stumping, and introducing bill after bill after bill into the British Parliament – for 30 years. Ultimately the Lord rewarded his faithfulness by ending the slave trade and freeing all the slaves in the British Empire. Wilberforce received that last bit of news on his death bed. You would not describe Wilberforce as a man of little faith. His faith did not falter at the enormity of the task. He believed God was in it; all he needed to do was not allow himself to grow weary in pursuit of what he believed God had called him to achieve. In our own day we have examples of people with such persistent faith, people who believe God has given them a mission and who attack that mission with single-minded devotion and determination. They know what God has called them to do and they will not be deterred, either by the enormity of the challenge or the obstacles and opposition along the way. (T.M. Moore) How will you obediently exercise your faith today?
