THOUGHTS ALONG THE WAY by Glenn Miller Election Day Euphoria November 4, 2014 GODS WORD: How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! - Psalm 133:1 Today is Election Day here in the United States and on this morning, I recall the last Presidential election I voted... I awoke early enough that morning to make sure I was the first in line. I realized the polls opened at 7:00 a.m. and knew that others might have the same vote-before-work philosophy that I had, so I left the house at 5:55 a.m.; practically insuring me (I thought) of me being the first in line. I arrived at the Elementary School a block from my home at 6:07 a.m., only to find that there were approximately 60 people in front of me! By the time the doors opened, the line was completely down the sidewalk and was curling around the block; numbering somewhere about 200 at that point. And this is from a county where 43 percent of registered voters voted early! Such is the same case today in 2014. But despite the long lines and the time spent waiting, there is a sense of celebration among those voting. If today is like past voting experiences, there will be no discussion of politics or the issues. No one in line today will see others in that same line as Republicans or Democrats. No, this morning we are all Americans exercising our Constitutional right to select our next leaders. There is a sense of unity; of cohesiveness; of patriotism. And yet I know that regardless of who wins (whenever that may be determined), many of my fellow early-morning voting friends will be disappointed while others will celebrate victory. Unity is not defined by everyone being in agreement, but by everyone accepting the majority opinion. It is that sense of unity that our Constitution beckons us and that same sense that our Lord calls us to. And in thinking about this, wouldnt it be great if that sense of unity penetrated into the Church? What if all Christians no longer saw one another as evangelical or fundamentalist or some other such moniker? What if we were to see different denominations as all serving and praising the same God and that God loves each of His children the same? Red and yellow, black and white / all are precious in His sight / Jesus loves the little (and big) children of the world.
