THREE BEAUTIFUL HADITHS ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF MUHARRAM ------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------- 1.Narrated by Abu Musa When the Prophet arrived at Medina, he noticed that some people among the Jews used to respect Ashura (i.e. 10th of Muharram) and fast on it. The Prophet then said, We have more right to observe fast on this day, and ordered that fasting should be observed on it. Bukhari Vol.5, 278 2.Narrated by AbuHurayrah Allahs Messenger (peace be upon him) said: The most excellent fast after Ramadan is Gods month, al-Muharram, and the most excellent prayer after what is prescribed is prayer during the night. (Muslim 565) 3.Narrated by Aisha The people used to fast on Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory. And on that day the Kaba used to be covered with a cover. When Allah made the fasting of the month of Ramadan compulsory, Allahs Apostle said, Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of Ashura) may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so. -Bukhari Volume 2, 662
