THREE MINUTE BIBLE STUDY A Fruit Salad, Not an Orchard Galatians 5.22-26 I had the good fortune of living in south Florida for eleven years. In addition to 72 degree temperatures and ocean breezes in the winter, we had citrus trees in our back yard. We had a Valencia orange tree, a Ponderosa lemon tree, a kumquat tree, and a Tangelo tree. I never got over the joy of walking out my back door, picking an orange off the tree, and eating it. I knew that each of those trees would reliably, each year, give me the same kind of fruit. When the citrus ripened we could not give it all away. It’s one thing to go to the store and buy a bag of oranges. It is another thing altogether to have a tree that gives you a couple hundred of them! Multiply that by four trees and, well, that’s a lot of juice! Here in Galatians 5.22-26 Paul describes the “fruit of the Spirit.” He has just given us a pretty nasty list of humanity at its worst and now he gives us a very different list. When he speaks of the fruit of the Spirit, the word “fruit” is singular in the original language. He then gives us a list of the singular fruit of the Spirit. For Paul, the fruit of the Spirit is not an orchard of trees where each tree bears different fruit, but it is a fruit salad. One salad with many different flavors and textures. When people live in the Spirit then the fruit of their lives has many flavors. That fruit which comes from the Spirit looks like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. It is not like the gifts of the Spirit where we get one but not others. No, this is the whole fruit salad. We get them all. This is such a better way to live than in verses 19-21. There is so much more life in this fruit bowl of living! Nothing tops this kind of living (v. 23). It is all the best things of life and they are yours for the living through a life of grace lived in the Spirit. Really, in which list would you prefer to live?
