(Courtesy WPTV website; Nov. 19) 2) We have macho, he-man hunters! “The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on Friday (Nov. 21, 2014) agreed, with little comment, to issue an order that immediately removes a prohibition on the use of noise-suppressors, or silencers, with rifles and pistols. … During the commission meeting, held in Key Largo, Fish and Wildlife staff and a couple of hunters defended the proposal as a means to protect hunters’ hearing, lessen the impact of hunting on others and help while introducing people to the sport.” (Courtesy Jim Turner; News Service of Florida; Palm Beach Post website, Nov. 22, 2014.) (OK, so the hunters concern about losing their hearing does reduce their he-man-ness more than a little. I suppose they don’t want to deafen themselves just because they want to deaden animals.) 3) We value – and enforce – the ideal of rugged self-sufficiency! Even in one of the richest towns in Florida, Manalapan, residents are forced to be tough: “On Nov. 18, Kersen De Jong pulled into the parking lot of the Manalapan Town Hall, backed his baby-blue Bentley into a disabled parking spot, balanced his legless body on a skateboard and then used the callused knuckles on both hands to push himself into the Town Commission meeting. ‘Like a little monkey,’ De Jong said, as he pushed himself up a ramp, which violates the Americans with Disabilities Act because it is too steep.
