THROUGH GLASS CLEARLY © Mike Lee I saw the past as in a window – not a mirror – crystal clear and realized it was an illusion; just a vapor of a life once lived. Beyond the glass was darkness, not continuation, and – it being a flat plane in two dimension – I was struck at how absurd it is for us to hold on to our memory as though it might be relived again. It cannot because there is no substance. It is nothing more than paste and just a sketch of what once was and yet we hold on to it as though it could be. It can, of course, but only in our dreams and even then it’s incomplete because details are missing. History’s a shell, a ghost of what once was, but is no more and so I learned a lesson that I must let go of what’s long gone, and can’t be lived again. I know because I re-visited places of significance that, even they, had changed; they weren’t the same. The people and the moments that I went through were all gone and what was left was an old frame missing the picture. Now I see things I’ve held onto, and – discarding every thought and giving up what can’t repeat – I’m living life by looking forward and not back; building new memory that one day I will release then go into the future with my eyes wide open and embrace that yet to come.
