THROUGH THICK AND THIN I WANTED TO LOSE WEIGHT SO I WENT TO THE PAINT STORE. I HEARD I COULD GET THINNER THERE. What’s so funny about this? Some people will do anything to lose weight. They try all the latest pills, diets, and exercise programs, all to no avail, that is, without succeeding. It’s true there are many obese people in this country, but my sense has always been that most of us are overly conscious about our weight. We take the advertising images, designed to make us insecure, too seriously. They do this by presenting us with models who don’t look anything like “real” people, the average person on the street. Most models are ultra-thin men and women, and are forced to remain that way if they want to keep working. Super-skinny is held up as the ultimate in beauty, when it really isn’t. People have all kinds of different tastes and preferences when it comes to body types. Some guys like big women and vice versa. They want someone with meat on their bones, with something to hold on to. Nothing wrong with that, IMO, but try to convince all those dieters out there, trying to look like all the runway models. Anyway, in our joke, we have someone who thinks they are too fat. They’ve heard that paint stores sell “thinner”. Paint is naturally pretty thick stuff. You have to stir it well before you use it. Even so, sometimes it’s just too thick. So if you have to add “paint thinner” to it, then you will have to stir it in well. This paint thinner is a noun and it’s made out of turpentine or some other oil based product that thins out the paint, makes it easier to apply and makes it last longer. Our hero in the joke is thinking of the comparative adjective, “thinner” and is confused by the word “get”. This word has many, many meanings. One meaning of get is to “obtain” or buy. So if you get thinner in a paint store, you’re buying the stuff to add to your paint can. But “get” can also mean to “become” So if you get thinner, it can mean you become less fat. But maybe our hero is on to something, because you can get thinner by getting thinner. You drink that stuff and you’ll stop eating for a month or even permanently. When they put you in the ground, I guarantee you’ll be plenty skinny! And THAT’s what’s so funny.
