THROWBACK PHOTOS; FOOD FOR THOUGHT Going back to 1946-47----- Do Parents still do this for their children and families?? Believe it or not, the photo/s show 68-year old baby shoes........ More specifically, these were my first ever baby shoes, purchased for me by my parents for my Baptism, a few months after my birth on Dec. 24, 1946...... If the shoes look solid, and no longer soft and cushiony to you, I assure you that you are correct. My mother, Carmen Ferrer Adevoso, told me several years later when I was bigger that my father Terry, perhaps intuitively sensing that I was to be their only child, sought to preserve my shoes for a long period of time. He was able to locate a Manila store (that early after the devastating World War II) that preserved family and other items by dipping them into molten bronze and then allowing them to dry until they completely hardened like stone, and then fashioning them into useful daily house knick-knacks such as book ends, as was done with my baby shoes. These book end shoe souvenirs have been part of my personal library and book collection ever since. More than just preserving part of my childhood however, these 68-year old shoes have helped cultivate in me a desire to know and preserve family and community history, as well as war and national history, whether by spoken or written word, by photo or drawing, audio or video material. My parents caused me to always seek to remember and cherish the past, which certainly has many life lessons to impart, to me and everyone else. As national hero Jose Rizal famously said: ang tao na hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan....
