THROWBACK THURSDAY #TBT: David Liebman performs the classic standard My Favorite Things via the influence of John Coltrane with Vic Juris on guitar, Tony Marino on bass and Jamey Haddad on drums. What I called the Dave Liebman Group began in 1991 after disbanding “Quest” with Richie Beirach. The first version of the band was with Vic Juris, Tony Marino, Jamey Haddad and Phil Markowitz (not on this clip). By 1997 Phil left and this version of the quartet went on for a few years before drummer Marko Marcinko replaced Jamey right up until 2013. The repertoire was quite mixed with ethnic influences (Jamey is an accomplished hand drummer), free tunes and renditions of standards as this clip demonstrates. I re-harmonized the head after Vic takes his incredible introduction and then of course go all out on the E pedal. There’s no question that I may have gone a bit overboard on my excursion with Jamey but I do like to strike a fire, especially at that swinging middle tempo. Obviously a marked Coltrane influence all over the place but also some elements of the free jazz idiom that I was involved with in the late ‘60s in the lofts of New York. My association with Vic was for 23 years that I treasure . . . he is such a great player, and with Tony he is still with me in my new group Expansions. - Lieb
