THURSDAY, AUGUST 28, 2014 – Romans 12:1-21 https://biblegateway/passage/?search=Romans+12%3A1-21&version=ESV Romans 12 If anyone has been around me at 7:45 in the morning, you have likely heard my alarm go off. It is not your typical alarm. It does not beep, or squeal, or ring. My alarm gives me a message to keep in mind my whole day. It says, “Son, your ego is writing checks your body can’t cash”. Ego or pride is a dangerous characteristic. Many have come to know the truth of the proverb that says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” Proverbs 16:18. My pride is not tame. It seeks to control me, consume me, and destroy me. Yes, destroy me. Pride seeks to put me where I do not belong. Pride can be described as a sort of ‘God-complex’. A ‘God-complex’ is a desire to receive praise and credit like a god. Seeking glory for myself, I take glory from God. My ego is writing checks my body can’t cash. I am not God. I will never be God. Paul warned, “I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think” v.3. And again, “Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight” v.16. The best I will ever be able to hope for is to write checks on God’s account. Giving glory to God, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13.
