THURSDAY, May 22 Psalm 74:19. Look upon your covenant; the dark places of the earth are haunts of violence. There are many dark places full of the haunts of violence in this land. From major cities to rural villages to townships come daily reports of murder, rape, incest, and domestic abuse. Sometimes the alleged perpetrators are celebrities; sometimes they are respected citizens, including government officials and priests. Too often they are nameless, faceless forms. Violence in South Africa has reached epidemic proportions. Those who can afford it often live behind walls topped with electrified fences or barbed wire. Many homes have panic buttons that can summon armed private security guards. Sometimes it leads one to ask, where is God in all of this? The answer is that God is healing, comforting, strengthening, and loving as South African churches provide sanctuary, education, and other assistance to victims. These churches are the voice of the voiceless, speaking out loudly for change. Many church services here end with this prayer: “God bless Africa—Guard our children, guide our leaders, and grant us peace.” Please keep this country and this continent in your prayers.
