TIDE GYMNASTICS COACH STEPS DOWN: Sarah Patterson, the coach of the University of Alabama womens gymnastics team for 36 years, has announced she is leaving that position immediately. Patterson, who was hired by Bear Bryant and coached the Tide to six national championships, will take a year of medical leave to have replacement surgery performed on both knees. She will then return to the school as a special assistant to Athletic Director Bill Battle. Assistant coach Dana Duckworth now moves up to the top job, with longtime assistant Bryan Raschilla staying on.
