TIETIE SPEAKS ON CAMPUS SANITATION Following Monday’s exposé by The 3rd Eye on the deteriorating health and sanitation conditions within campus and specifically of Hostel K, the Health Director Jemimah Tietie has now come out to give an assurance to comrades that necessary measures are being put in place to improve the situation. “A tendering process is in the works to have the varsity purchase the appropriate tools to enhance hostel cleanliness,” Tietie said yesterday during an exclusive interview with The 3rd Eye. The director added that a select team from her docket had had a seat down with officials from the Hostels and Catering Manager’s office earlier in the week in regards to the same. The director during an interview, urged students to communicate their problems to the hostel representatives who have been capacitated to look into matters affecting the hostels. Our continued spot check on the state of hostels reveals that the hostel cleaners indeed lack adequate equipment to solve the drainage problem that is increasingly on the rise in the campus. “The cause of bad sanitation is lack of proper facilities to clean.” said one of the hostel cleaners who sought anonymity. Tietie is hopeful that the new tools will be available for use by the end of the week. She however attributes portions of the problem to student negligence, pin-pointing on the poor methods of sanitary pad disposal in the female hostels. On to another issue affecting students, we spoke to the officials incharge of the water pump within campus to explain the acute water shortage experienced in the Soweto hostels. They explained that the pipes from Kesses dam to the tank serving hostels around Soweto have not been functioning. Thus, water is now being pumped from Lessos which cannot accommodate the entire hostels hence the shortage.
