TIGER TALES - AUGUST, 2014 A Hearty Hello to all our Riding Community, in Oklahoma and everywhere! By the time you read this, well be in the middle of another long, hot summer characterized by triple-digit temperatures and dry weather. That weather tempts folks into riding with less protective gear, which is a mistake, since the road isnt any less forgiving during the summer months. Remember as you get out there that you put the cows hide at risk to save your own! Dont forget to stay hydrated, too-dehydration can cause muscle cramping which can distract you from concentrating on the Road. Drink lots of water and fluids which keep your electrolyte levels up! I really enjoyed the June ABATE State Board Meeting at the VFW on South Penn in Oklahoma City, which started off with something new-ABATE providing Breakfast! Many thanks to our ABATE Members who worked so hard to put breakfast on for attendees. It was reasonably priced and delicious! The decision was made to begin with breakfast more regularly in the future, so I hope that will provide ABATE Members with more incentive to attend and find out what your State Board is doing on your behalf. So, come on out and see whats going on to continue to make Oklahoma the best state in which to ride! Be sure to check out ABATEs new Ride Bells being offered for only Ten Bucks-they are Awesome! They make perfect gifts, as Good Luck Talismans for loved ones who ride. A couple of worthwhile events are shaping up which you should consider attending. The Mid-South MILE Seminars is slated for October 17-19, 2014 and will be held at the Best Western Wichita North Hotel and Suites in Wichita, KS. Freedom Fighters from a multi-state area, as well as national-level organizations including the American Motorcyclist Association, Motorcycle Riders Foundation and National Coalition of Motorcyclists will be presenting educational and informative seminars. Its just a short trip, so make plans to be there! You can obtain more information and print a Pre-Registration application at: midsouthmile.org Also, the Texas Confederation of Clubs and Independents is hosting the NCOM Region 2 Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Austin November 14-16. Well have updated information on, among other things, the Federal Governments attempts to confiscate Motorcycle Club Insignia. If you value Biker Liberty, you need to make plans to take part! Check out onabike , okcoc.net, and txcocinews.org for more information and to get a copy of the Conference Agenda. Tigers Tip O The Month: The Dog Days of Summer surprise us with pop-up storms featuring intense winds, heavy rain, and even hail! Dont let sudden environmental shifts cause you to lose control, especially if the heat lulls you with Highway Hypnosis. Remember also, that the heat causes other motorists to become further insulated from the Road (and YOU) with Air Conditioners and Stereos going full-blast. Stay Aware!! As I wind this down, I need to remind everyone that this has been a hard season for our ABATE Chapter. June started out with COD Members Jim Ray and Janice Olson losing their toddler grandson, Noah, in an accidental pool drowning. Lots of folks dont realize that this is one of the most frequent causes of death in young children. His Memorial Service took place June 20. I hope everyone will remember the family in thought and prayer as they cope with their grief. At the same time this was happening, ABATE Life Member Ripper Bailey was admitted to St. Anthonys ICU in OKC when his kidneys shut down, and had to be put on dialysis. He was improving, and was moved to a private room, but unfortunately had a heart attack and a stroke June 29. At present, he is still in ICU, and according to his wife Michelle, Ripper continues to be minimally responsive. The Neurologist is continuing follow-ups, but its not looking good right now. Please continue to remember Ripper and the Family in your thoughts and prayers and Ill provide more information as I get it. It certainly comforts Michelle to know the family has so much support. A number of COD Members went out to their property to finish building a Disabled Ramp and do some cleaning up. Many thanks for continuing to demonstrate that our Riding Community is indeed a Family! Take care of each other, Ride Safely, Sober and Aware, and Ill check in with you when Labor Day Weekend and autumn are on the horizon. Keep It On The Black Strip Between The Trees, Tiger Mike
