“TIGERS GRIND OUT VICTORY IN BLAYNEY” The Oberon First National Tigers have come away with a 26-22 grinding win in Blayney on Sunday, down on troops and looking to avoid the wooden spoon in a sometimes scrappy affair from both sides it was the tigers that held the ascendancy when it mattered keeping the fast finishing bears at bay in key areas of the match to take the much needed two points. The opening minutes of the game brought some real intent from the tigers sticking to the game plan and the points came after prop Luke Christie-Johnston proved too much for the Blayney defence to handle charging over from close range carrying several defenders for the first four pointer of the match and Steve lane converted for a 6-0 lead .Next it was tigers Back rower Kirk Robert’s turn as he forced his way over after a courageous 2nd effort to cross the stripe much to the delight of tigers fans the conversion was unsuccessful but the Oberon tigers held a 10-0 lead. Following some great sets from the tigers the Blayney bears returned serve after some mounted possession with tries to winger Kurt Beahan and replacement player Sam sweeting to square it back up at 10 apiece. The tigers then kicked into gear when Reece Finlay was able to stroll over after a kick and a tip on from winger Darren Hotham followed by a great play after the scrum base from Brenton Gibson who was able to split the bears’ defence running a great line to go over under the posts. The final try of the half was a brilliant solo effort from winger Joel Christie-Johnston who showcased his speed and agility to go over for the tigers 5th try of the game and a 26-10 Half-time lead. After the Break both sides contributed to plenty of errors, with no side clearly looking like scoring despite several opportunities wasted. With 20 minutes remaining in the match Blayney enjoyed some back to back penalties which piggybacked them up the field and Bears 5/8 Terry Brown made the tigers pay crossing after some good lead up work from his dummy half Tom Learey to get the locals back within 10 points at 26-16 to the tigers . More possession to the home-side followed soon after and Blayney winger Cameron Dennis was able to reach out and score in the corner to setup a thrilling finish at 26-22 with 7 minutes remaining. Despite some more errors in the remainder of the game the First National Oberon Tigers were able to shut the gate on the Blayney Bears defensively and take the match fulltime Oberon 26 Blayney 22. After a 3 game slump and in need of wins in their final two games of the season the tigers fought off a late flurry of tries to come away with a 12 point victory, it took a good 15 minutes for first points though after the tigers failed on several occasions to put up points and Lochie Gilmore and Jamie Arriola were able to capatilise on some holes in the defence to put the tigers up 12-0 early on. Blayney did respond though through centre Cameron Hobby who found some space in the tigers backline to peg the lead back to 6 , but before the break form centre Jacob Howes continued the tiger’s momentum breaking tackles and diving over out wide to give the tigers a 16-6 halftime lead. The 2nd half came with a hurricane of points from both sides as the side with the ball usually scored and errors also played there part in the game . Gavan Seaman crossed from close range to score his first for the season and soon after Riccie Arriola scored a scintillating try after a great backline move to edge the tigers out further at 26-6. Blayney did reply though after some second phase play allowed them to cross after 5/8 Glenn Nunn sent replacement player Damian Doolan over, And soon after they doubled that when Adam Lowe caught the tigers napping and he was able get the ball down over the line 26-18 to the tigers and the alarm bells started to ring for the boys going in to the last 15 minutes of the match. The tigers as they did throughout the match repaid the locals with two more cleverly constructed tries out wide to both Jacob Howes and Riccie Arriola who picked up their 2nd tries for the day and a late consolation try to Blayney was too little too late for the home team Damian Doolan picking up his 2nd for the game also Fulltime Oberon 36 Blayney 24.
