TIGERS IN DOUBLE DEAL SHEFFIELD Speedway are delighted to confirm the final two members of their revamped team for the 2014 season… Andre Compton and Simon Nielsen. Compton, who first rode for the Owlerton side in 1998, is back after ending his speedway exile last season and will start at reserve. His starting average of 4.36 is identical to that of Danish star Nielsen, who had spells at Plymouth and Leicester last season – but the management want Compton at reserve with the potential for extra rides. Sheffield co-promoter David Hoggart said: “We welcome Simon to Sheffield Speedway and our new manager Joe Screen will be working closely with him. “Andre is a class act on his day and it’s a bonus for us to have him at reserve to start the season. There were occasions last season when he looked like the Andre of old, in his prime, and we are expecting big scores from him. “For the first time in recent seasons Sheffield will be starting the season with some strength in-depth and we are delighted with the way the team has shaped up.” Compton, meanwhile, is delighted to be back for a full season at Owlerton. He said: “I had a spell at Glasgow and came back to Sheffield but it took me a while to get going again after so long out. “But when I look back at my performances, I think up until the Premier League Riders’ Championship I had the fastest time of the season around Sheffield which shows I can still do it. “I also beat some great riders like Craig Cook around Owlerton so I know I can still do it and hopefully starting the season with everyone else will give me a fair chance. “Naturally I want to take full advantage of being at reserve by scoring loads of points and then hopefully kick on and get back to where I used to be.”
