TIP OF THE DAY: Anaerobic refers to a state where the body exercises without air, the opposite of aerobic which means with air. As you run at a fast pace, the body’s demand for oxygen begins to exceed the cardiovascular system’s ability to deliver oxygen to the muscles. With most trained runners, this begins to occur once you move from the friendly confines below 75 percent of your maximum heart rate to the out-of-breath country above. Your muscles crave oxygen, but despite how fast the heart beats, the muscles can absorb only so much. Eventually waste products accumulate in the muscles forcing a slowdown or stoppage. Nevertheless, if you are interested in peak performance, you need to do some anaerobic training. Too much speedwork, however, and you may become overtrained, causing performances to deteriorate.
