TIP OF THE DAY: Here are Phils Tips for getting young children into backgammon: 1) Start out teach HyperGammon. Each player starts with 3 checkers on the opponents 1 point and the first one to get them around and off wins. The children learn how to move the checkers, make blocking points, and hit, and then learn bearing off. 2) Go to YouTube and search for How to Play Backgammon and there are some excellent, free videos showing how to set up the board and the basic rules and strategies. 3) Play some 1 point matches without the cube. 4) Then start playing some 3 point matches with the cube. 5) Sign them up as a Junior Member of the USBGF so they can feel a part of the bigger backgammon community and enjoy our web site and facebook page, videos, etc. In teaching children strategy, start with the idea that you are trying to win a race, but when you cant, you need to either block or hit your opponent, and concentrate on which of those three game plans is best. Spend some extra time on the opening moves and second rolls moves. DO NOT try to correct every move. Make it fun. And most kids will enjoy playing on the computer, so set them up with XG Mobile on a tablet or smartphone...its a free app unless you want the more deluxe version.
