TIP OF THE DAY: In match play, there are many factors you must consider in order to know whether to take or pass a double. There is no way to learn all of these factors well without study. You must know what your take point and price of gammon are, as well as the price of gammons for your opponent and his recube take point. You must be able to estimate take points and wins and losses and come up with a gammon adjusted take point. Then you must be able to factor in recube Vig (or your power in holding the cube). And if you do all that properly, you will know whether to take or pass a given cube. Sound complex? It is, yet most players dont bother with most of the above...they simply take a guess as to whether they should take or drop. With many years of experience, some people are able to guess pretty well most of the time and can become pretty good players, but the truly skilled player doesnt guess. He estimates or even knows many of the above factors and makes a truly informed, calculated decision.
