TIPONI WHITE BEAR (RITA COOLIDGE) It is holding you down like saskatoon berry willow tipi pins. I am Tiponi White Bear, and you are? HOLDEN LAKE Holden Lake. DISSOLVE TO: Samuel picks up an old guitar leaning against the shack. He asks Holden something as he strums. SAMUEL CROW (KRIS KRISTOFFERSON) Anybody ever tell you Jesus was a Capricorn? HOLDEN LAKE Nobody ever told me. You play that thing? SAMUEL CROW Nobody ever told me I couldn’t. Samuel Crow sings Jesus Was a Capricorn. After he finishes, Holden asks him a question. HOLDEN LAKE Mind if I give it try? Samuel hands his guitar over to Holden. Holden plays a few chords and sings. Samuel whittles a statue while he listens to Holden’s song. SCENE NOTE: (The song Holden sings is Robby Johnson’s choice.) After Holden finishes the song, he hands the guitar back to Samuel. SAMUEL CROW Come back around sometime. I’d like to hear your story. I could use the company. HOLDEN LAKE I’ll be back. I have to wash my spirit clean. Samuel RAISES HIS EYEBROWS and looks at Holden. SAMUEL CROW Sounds like you ran into Tiponi White Bear in the backwoods. It’s wise to listen to the woman of thirty-two hides. HOLDEN LAKE You know Tiponi White Bear? SAMUEL CROW For many moons. Tiponi White Bear bore me a daughter. HOLDEN LAKE What’s thirty-two hides? SAMUEL CROW That’s how many hides it takes to make a big tipi. The Indians calculated it, thirty-two hides. CLOSE ON -- A carved WOODEN BEAR figurine lying on the table of many carved figurines of all SIZES and SHAPES. Samuel picks the wooden bear figurine out of all the others. He takes a LEATHER TIE lying on the table and loops it through the small hole drilled at the top of the bear figurine. He ties a knot in the leather tie. He hands the bear necklace to Holden. SAMUEL CROW Take this bear necklace. You need a spirit totem. You are the bear. Holden looks at the necklace. CLOSE ON -- The bear necklace in the palm of Holden’s hand. He clenches his fist around it. HOLDEN LAKE Thanks, Samuel.
