TIPS: Part 2 of 27 Painting Tips TIP: Try using press on vinyl striping (from auto stores or art stores in the press type section) for perfection borders rather than painted stripes. It is easy to apply and comes in rolls like ribbon in assorted colors and widths as narrow as 1/8. Apply before varnishing the piece. TIP: Rather than painting stripes, cut stripes with an x-Acto knife from colored paper and glue them to your project, then varnish. Quick, easy, perfect! TIP: The first step in painting is to ASSUME you may not have traced and transferred correctly ... now is the time to make adjustments, not later. TIP: Undercoat shapes starting in the MIDDLE of the shape ... then spread the paint to the shapes edges. This ensures thinner paint on the edges and prevents a ridge build-up that is difficult to disperse! TIP: All paint is transparent to one degree or another. For the greatest luminosity, always undercoat the object in white so the light may penetrate the paint, bounce off the white undercoat, and return to the eye. Note: ALWAYS undercoat yellow butterflies with white! TIP: Always keep handy a full-size printed copy of your pattern on a clear transparency as you paint (office supply stores print these). Frequently check your painting through this transparency to prevent unwanted distortions as you work. Checking through tracing paper is not nearly as effective. Get the crystal clear advantage! TIP: Try using an acrylic gel medium with watercolors. It is the same transparency as water, but allows more control when and where you want it. Also, it does not warp thin papers ... very useful sometimes! TIP: Create a variety of greens with these simple Sap Green mixes. Sap Green + Raw Umber = olive greens. Sap Green + Prussian Blue = blue greens. Sap Green + black = forest greens. Mix any of the above with white for lighter cooler greens, or with yellow for lighter warmer greens. Tip: When blending shapes with a mop, begin blending on the outside edge of the shape! Beginning in the middle frequently results in a hole with a ring around it! Instead, start at the outside of the shape and gradually approach the middle. TIP: Paint spider webs with watery white color, then overpaint with Jo Sonjas Opal Dust for spooky sparkle! TIP: Try a mini angular, rather than a round brush when painting tiny shapes. The angle lets you get in small spaces, while the flat shape helps blend as you go. Remember, a round brush leaves ridges. These brushes are available as small as a size 12/0. TIP: Mix your own universal shade color with Dioxazine Purple + Raw Umber. Made transparent with a gel medium or water, this mix is perfect for cast shadows. For warmer shadows use more Umber. For cooler shadows, use more purple. TIP: To dull a color, mix a touch of its complement on the color wheel! Therefore, dull yellow with a touch of purple, green with a touch of red, orange with a touch of blue, etc.
