TIRED OF THE HYPE — As someone who has watched the Cleveland Browns for 50 years (and was in the stands for their last NFL Championship, Dec. 27, 1964), I feel qualified to make this statement: Johnny Manziel is not the answer. ... Yet the national media has seized upon him like mad dogs in a meat market (thank you, Marty Schottenheimer). Linked below is the non-story on the front page of The New York Times sports section today. •• Here are a few reasons why Manziel wont lead Cleveland to the promised land: •• Hes never won a championship at any level. (I base that statement on the fact that neither championship nor title appears anywhere on his Wikipedia page. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Manziel) •• Hes too small. Brian Sipe was small, too, and I loved him, but he never won the Super Bowl. ... Name the last small QB to win the Super Bowl — go ahead, Ill wait. It rarely happens. •• He won the Heisman Trophy. This college popularity contest rarely predicts professional greatness. Only three Heisman winning QBs have ever started and won a Super Bowl — Roger Staubach (1972, 1978), Jim Plunkett (1981, 1984) and Paul Hornung (who was a running back in the pros). ... I say Manziel will be no better than these stiffs, Heisman winners all since 1971: Pat Sullivan Doug Flutie Vinny Testaverde Andre Ware Ty Detmer Gino Torretta Charlie Ward Danny Wuerffel Chris Weinke Eric Crouch Carson Palmer Jason White Matt Leinart Troy Smith Tim Tebow Sam Bradford Cam Newton Robert Griffin III •• Finally, hes just a punk. His act wont cut it in an NFL huddle.
