TITLE: PEACEHEALTH SACRED HEART HOSPITALISTS VOTE TO UNIONIZE For Immediate Release: Oct. 8, 2014 Springfield, OR: PeaceHealth Hospital Medicine, Sacred Heart Medical Centers Hospitalists held a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) vote Oct 7, 2014, and have overwhelmingly chosen to join the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), a national Union of Professionals. The vote in favor was 91 percent. Citing frustrations that their concerns about patient safety and workplace conditions were being ignored, the Hospitalists - physicians who specialize in the care for hospitalized patients in the place of the patient’s primary care physician - said that they saw organizing as the only effective way to make their voices heard. “We feel a need for support outside of PeaceHealth Medical Group and Sacred Heart Medical Center to protect our jobs, our reputations and most importantly, our patients” said a spokesman for the group. “We are a group of dedicated and motivated professionals who have a personal stake in this community. We represent close to 300 combined years of experience in Hospital Medicine. PeaceHealth Hospital Medicine exists not just to serve Sacred Heart Medical Center but also the many primary care physicians in the community for whom we admit. We are excited about winning our Union and look forward to working together with administration for the benefit of our hospital, our professional practice, and our patients. The Hospitalists are ready to sit down and bargain a contract that meets the needs of the patients they serve and expect the hospital to do the same. Following the election results, the NLRB will certify AFT as the legal bargaining representative, obligating the hospital administration to bargain a contract with the Union. AFT has 1.6 million members nationwide and has grown into a trade union representing workers in education, health care and public service. The Hospitalists work with more than 1,300 nurses at Sacred Heart Medical Center who are represented by the Oregon Nurses Association (ONA), an affiliate of AFT.
