TITLE: The Web EPISODE: 23 AUTHOR: Candy Master chu restaurant was an elegant Chinese restaurant in an old building along ring road., ten blocks from the compass builders. The bricks were painted red with a touch of white. A well-lit, heavy sign with red chinese letterings, with the english translation: oriental chinese cuisines hung over half of the fancy chinese styled roof extension. Inside were walls of algae tint, adorned with pictures of dragons, some fancy Asian wall papers, ten round tables covered with white and yellow table clothes. A pastry display counter rested against the open cooking space. A small chinese chef barked orders at a petite assistant, they both cooked with the intensity of concert pianists, while two beautiful Asian chefs served the meals. Low volume chinese songs came from ceiling speakers. Mrs Seriki sat opposite her son at the posh chinese restaurant. This was their first time of dining alone since the whole adebimpe saga. Mrs Serikis hands shook as she fought to hold the menu. When she dropped it the second time, Tobi held her hands over the table. Something was bothering her, he was sure. Mum, what is the problem? He asked her, concern written on his handsome face. Tobiloba, she smiled, I gave you a sweet name. Tobi knew where the whole drama was heading. Mum, you know the way I feel about you hasnt and wont change. I have nothing but love for you. Even my...Bolus mother has nothing against you. He assured her. Thank you. She freed her hands from his tender grip and placed her palm on his hand. Can we order now? She smiled. This time, she managed to hold the menu firmly and scanned it. We should go back to Bangkok Restaurant in VI for a nice Thai cuisine. Lets go on saturday, mum. Just you and me, in Lagos for the Thai food, my treat. Tobis sensitivity and affectionate nature was one of the things she admired about her boy. One more reason she couldnt share him. They managed to place an order for Bok choi with oyster sauce and chilli with steamed noodles. When the food arrived, mrs seriki complained about the quantity, quality and even found fault with the smiling and courteous waitress. They call this place a chinese restaurant, she hissed. The chop sticks are the only thing that looked chinese in the food. Mum, something is on your mind. Tell me. She sighed and leaned back on her chair, cleared her throat and looked at Tobi. Tobiloba, has Adebimpe told you who your father is? Tobi was taken aback by Mrs Serikis unexpected question. She had been avoiding the topic of his biological mother and he had decided never to mention her unless unavoidable. He had just received the analysis of the oral swab they sent to a Lagos lab, the envelope laid unopened in his briefcase. I have an idea, ma. He wiped his mouth with the napkin and sipped some complimentary green tea before he continued. It could be dad, as in Chief Seriki. Mrs Seriki felt even more bitter, left out. Adebimpe and chief disgusted her, but she decided to take her boy out of his misery. Dont worry yourself about getting my husbands sample; he is your biological father. Even though this was expected, his reaction was still one of shock at the confirmation. How, I mean who told you? He had cause to get an analysis of your dna and his... She was saying, but he cut her short. Why? How? I never gave him a sample for any lab! He almost screamed. Sorry on his behalf dear, he didnt want you to feel bad. Apparently, an id*iot sent him an sms saying he is not your biological father. Nice of him to get my sample without my consent! What did he take?hair strand from my comb? My chewed gum? Toothbrush? Hes such a sneaky man! Tobi ranted. He loves you so much Tobi, he couuld never ask you for sample. She defended her husband. Like I said, the result came out positive, you can tell Adebim...Bolus mum. She sipped the last drops of her green tea and wiped her mouth with the napkin. She opened her purse to as if to get something out. Without looking inside, she felt for the white envelope containing the remaining part of the substance she gave Temi. Silly girl. She had traveled all the way to Kogi state to get this stuff, and now shes backing out. Mrs Seriki was upset, but desperate. Tobi dear, help me check the pastry stand for something I can bite on. I have gone through their dessert list and It sucks. Tobi stood up and headed for the pastry stand. Mrs Seriki scanned the restaurant, only three other tables were occupied and they werent looking at her side. She had to try and do what she had to do. She would have prefered it used on madam ty because according to baba, if used on Tobi, madam ty can still fight it but if used on madam ty, the hatred would have been more powerful and unbreakable coming from mother to son as against son to mother. Have this. Tobi was back so fast. He placed a small plate of pie on the table before mrs seriki. I felt a strange chill just now. He told her. Hmm, the ac is getting to me too. I think we should go, son. She stood up, leaving the pie. Tobi paid and they left. Where are you going now? She asked Tobi. He had told her earlier he was going to see his mum and sister. Home of course. He replied. Are you not going to felele again? Mrs seriki asked, elated at the fact that he had no interest in seeing the falele crew again. Mum, please! Why should I leave you and go meet some woman and her daughter? He asked. ******************* Temi got off the bike and quickly squeezed the agreed N100 into the bike mans palms. She rushed inside the house, breathing heavily. Hey, its Temi. Bolu announced. Bolu was holding her bag when she entered. She grabbed her bag from her and checked inside. I didnt steal your money o. Bolu joked when she saw her going through the bag. I know...I kept a special gift here, its a surprise. Temi said, still not sure they didnt see the charm. Well, your secret is safe, I just found your bag now and I didnt even open it. Temi quickly squeezed the money envelope in her handbag and picked the rice Bolu kept for her. She believed her. She ate her own food and they waited for Tobi. Whats wrong with your brother, bolu? Madam ty paced the room, worried about her son. He never failed to come whenever he promised. In fact, he was never late. Hes not picking his calls and he didnt call to tell us hes not coming Bolu was a bit worried too. She had called him earlier and his response was kind of strange. You people should stop bothering me. He had told her when she called. Now he wasnt picking her calls again. Temi, how about you call him?, bolu suggested but Temi quickly shook her head. No, I dont think I should. With Ade and Temi gone, madam ty and Bolu sat down in their living room and discussed the change in Tobis attitude. I will go and check on him tomorrow. Bolu promised her mum. They talked for sometime and decided to call it a day. Madam ty didnt sleep a wink. ************************
