TITLE: The Web (part 2) EPISODE: 11 AUTHOR: Candy Tobi waited anxiously outside the arrival hall of the MMIA. He shifted on his weight intermittently on both legs. Its been almost two years since he last set eyes on the woman he was there to meet. Stop there Nifemi. He heard the familiar voice before he ever saw the face. Nifemi, a baby girl of about one year tugged at his pants. He looked down and tapped her cheeks playfully. Eh, where is your mummy? You shouldnt be running alone. Nifemi. He heard the voice again, this time closer. He raised up his head to see a woman pushing a heavily loaded trolley. Temi! He screamed. Tobi! She ran up to him, abandoning her overloaded trolley. They were lost in a tight embrace for minutes. Mummy! Nifemi pulled her Temis cotton pants. She picked her up and rocked her against her chest. You dont go running off on me, ok, sweetie? The baby nodded in affirmation. She smiled and hugged Tobi again, its so good to see you, Tobi. I thought I was going to have to come after you. Tobi told her. And, you never told me about ... Nifemi. She helped him out. Yea, you didnt tell me about Nifemi. I mean, that was fast! she walked towards the trolley and started pushing. Ill get that, you get your daughter. Tobi took the trolley from her. They followed him to the car and they both unloaded the trolley in the trunk. They chatted about her education, life in Canada and every other thing except Nifemi. Temi had traveled to Canada for her masters program without telling Tobi. He had managed to convince her to stay back and do the masters in Nigeria even after getting her visa. He was very angry when he got to know she eventually traveled, without informing him. He tried dating other girls since then, but none excited him like she did. He realized he still loved her. Why didnt you tell me you were traveling? Tobi turned towards her. I mean, I saw you on thursday the week before you left and you never mentioned the fact that you were bent on going. Tobi, I honestly didnt plan to go. But after seeing Bolu and Ade in your office that day, I felt like a betrayer. I already had the visa, you know that. All I had to do was buy my ticket. Explained Temi. They both sat in silence for sometime. The only sound was coming from Nifemi. Ok, this is awkward, but I have to ask you, where is her father? Tobi broke the silence. Can we talk about this when we are safely in Ibadan, Tobi? She asked him. They were driving through a very rough patch and she was scared, besides, it was getting dark and she didnt want to discuss Nifemi just yet. He nodded and slotted in a disc. The music was a welcome relief. ************************ Youve done well for yourself, my dear. Said Temi as she looked around the well stocked supermarket. All thanks to God, Ade and Tobi. They were both seated in her office at the supermarket. They both stared at each other for a while, none saying a word. Temi lowered her gaze first. Bolu, I kept thinking about how I behaved with you and mama before I traveled. She said, shamefully staring at her black pumps instead of her friend. Bolu smiled and tapped her arms playfully with her mobile phone. Temi, she said, I know that was why you left the country- shame. But believe me, you didnt have to! She concluded. Temi tried to look at her friend, you know I will always love you like a sister, right? I know. Bolu assured her She had her masters degree already, but she was back in the Nigerian job market. I pray I get a decent job soon, Bolu, or Ill apply as your storekeeper. They both laughed cheerily. Bolu stood up slowly and stood behind her. Temi, why are you punishing my brother? Why the suspense? When are you planning to tell him he is a father? Temi sighed in frustration. Bolu, I didnt know you guys have settled, I was not happy with him, that was why I didnt tell him initially. She turned to face her friend, how do I tell him now? She asked. Bolu walked back to her seat behind the desk and sat down. She was due any day and she got tired standing on her feet easily. Find the courage to tell him. Right now, he is upset because he thinks you cheated on him. The guy loves you! She pleaded with her eyes. Temi smiled and said, you know she looks just like Tobi! He should have seen the resemblance. Even your mum knew before I told her. She smiled again. I will tell him today, I promise. Thanks, go now, go make my brothers day. ********************** Good morning
