TMB Update Days 4-6: We are now in Les Houches, France, 63 miles into 105 mile trek and gone up 16,473 feet & down 18,972 ft. This town is the traditional starting place for TMB & near Chamonix. Our feet are tired. Lots of up/down in mountains, meadows, rocks & dirt trails. Didnt have Internet service past couple nights. Stayed in a rustic, old country refugio on night 4, Col de Balme, on Swiss/French border. Run by very traditional, grandparent like French couple who dont speak any English, they put Tammy & me (only girls that night) in our own dorm room, separate from male hikers. Last night we stayed on a ski slope at the Le Flegere refugio. Wooded floors, ceiling & beams, our dorm room had at least 20 bunk beds and almost all were full. A mix of men and women hikers, ages 16 - 75. Aside from Tammy getting mooned, twice, by a large German man in the bunk next to her, and me, having a very friendly, older Italian man, in his tighty whites, come greet me with kisses on both cheeks, it was a pleasant place:-) Tonight we treated ourselves to a 2 star hotel in Les Houches. Nice hot shower & pizza for dinner. Lots of up & down on rocks, snow & ladders. Im a little concerned about weather next 2 days. Weve been blessed with sunny skies so far...alas rain is in the forecast. This will not make for fun hiking. Our goal is to be back in Courmayeur, Italy by July 22...23rd at the latest.
