TMCP member hits bottles on his head to end corruption in college Decades ago, his leader and now chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee, when she was Youth Congress president, had tried to hang herself publicly in protest against corruption in Pradesh Congress. On Monday, Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) member and former general secretary of Siliguri College Student’s Union Prasanjit Mandal hit bottles on his own head inside the college compound demanding the immediate admission of nine students and end the corruption in the college. One would not know, however, if Prasanjit’s leader would be impressed as those were beer bottles which the TMCP leader used in an apparent bid to take his life. Mondol went to meet teacher-in-charge Ujjwal Sarkar in the college to submit an application regarding the admission of those nine students and to end the corruption. A meeting was in process with the head of the departments of the college when Prasanjit entered the room. Sarkar asked him to wait till the meeting is over but he said he could not wait that long and started reading a letter. Soon after, he went downstairs and started breaking the bottle on his head. College authorities immediately called the police and Prasanjit was taken to the hospital with head injury. Prasanjit’s grievance was that during admission for the first year in August nine eligible students did not get the chance while many other admissions were done in an irregular fashion. He alleged that the Teacher-in-charge and the convener of the admission committee were engaged in corruption. He also said that the issue was brought to notice to the SDO, Siliguri and TMCP Darjeeling district chief. Even after being hospitalized, Prasanjit had threatened to end his life if the matter was not sorted out immediately. He said: “I follow the ideology of the chief minister Mamata Banerjee and NBDD minister Gautam Deb so I will not allow any corruption in the college.” When asked, teacher-in-charge Ujjwal Sarkar said: “Praanjit entered when the meeting was going on. It was a pre-planned suicidal attempt as he had carried three bottles inside his bag. The case he is stating is of before my joining as the in-charge in this college. It will be enquired if the allegation is genuine. He also said that a complaint against Prasanjit had not been filed before the police, it will be decided in the governing committee.
