TN Suresh Kumar on 15 August 2014 became the first Indian to visit to the stratosphere, the second layer of the Earth’s atmosphere. He traveled to an altitude of 17100 meters in MIG-29 from Sokol Airbase near Nizhny Novgorod in Russia. During the travel to reach the stratosphere in 48 minutes, the aircraft reached to a maximum speed of 1850 km per hour. Kumar, a senior scientist working with the ISRO’s Master Control Facility in Hassan paid a sum of 15 lakh rupees for the travel. Apart from being the first Indian to reach the stratosphere, he is the 259th person of the world to take the flight since an agency conducting space travel in Russia named Country of Tourism Ltd. started the journey called Edge of Space. The agency started the journey six years ago. Kumar is one of the four people, who were selected by ISRO in 1985 to travel to the space, but the process of sending those four selected candidates didn’t happened after an explosion occurred on the space shuttle Challenger in February 1986.
