Having had trust in our sources in New York, who was the first to relay to us that Mr Francisco was in a coma, we trusted their new information was credible. However, his son has confirmed to us Mr. Francisco’s condition has not changed. EARLIER Story: Sparrow, who resides in the US, had been ailing with diabetes. A brief statement issued by the family of Slinger Franciso yesterday stated: "The family of Slinger Francisco The Mighty Sparrow is sad to announce that the Calypso King Of The World is in a New York hospital in a coma. The family has been asking fans and the people of Trinidad and Tobago to pray for him and to respect their privacy. Earlier story: Calypso icon the Slinger “Mighty Sparrow” Francisco was hospitalized at a New York hospital in serious condition on the weekend. A facebook Timeline post on Muzic Playerz DJ duo page stated that sources close to it informed of his condition. According to the Trinidad Express Sparrow was reportedly described by a friend as “very depressed” last week. The paper reported that calls to Sparrow’s home and mobile phones in New York went unanswered, as well as calls to his home in Trinidad, where his wife, Margaret Francisco, spends much of her time. Sparrow was supposed to be presented a lifetime achievement award last Thursday by the Trinidad and Tobago Consulate in New York. The calypsonian did not attend the ceremony and instead sent his son, Richard Francisco, to receive the award on his behalf, with a message that he was unable to attend the function. In July 2010 calypso fans were shocked as they watched the Calypso King of the World, the Mighty Sparrow, sit throughout his entire performance during NAPA Fest at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA) in Port of Spain. Francisco, brought on stage in a wheelchair, was placed on a chair in the centre of the stage before the stage lights went on. The sight of the once-powerful performer, now just a shadow of himself, brought tears to the eyes of many. The effect was so disturbing that some patrons left the building.
