TO ALL MY FRIENDS . . . ITS MY MOTHERS WARMTH! I would like to say thank you so much for all those birthday wishes. May the days ahead of us, all, be more memorable than we have ever seen yet. Thanks are in no small ways to MY MOTHER, Abigail Ade Afolayan, who gave birth to me a few decades ago under the most difficult of all birthing circumstances - in a village; no electricity, no running water, no hospital, no doctors, no nurses, not a single tablet to swallow, no sterilizations, no anestetia - only surrounded by a gathering of village women and prayerful sympathizers! If anyone deserves being honored, decorated, praised, feted, and petted, it has to be my mother. This is why I fast on my birthdays - just to thank God for my mother and reflect over her warmth of the days of yore! Mother, indeed, is golden, as the Yoruba people say. The supernatural service of motherhood cannot be bought with a price and cannot be rewarded with a prize. Even more than our soldiers, they are the red tags upon which the price of our freedom is indelibly written. I thank my mother, and I thank your mom for you. She is too far away for a gift and too distant for a hug; sufficient it is for me to say, even quarter of a century after her passing, I still feel my mothers warmth!
