TO OUR ENTIRE RAMILY: In recent weeks weve had lots of requests to reveal our identity and questions about whether we’d “lift the curtain” at graduation. We are passing the account on to new (and very capable) hands soon, so wed like to address some of those questions. We started FC for many reasons, but the most important was a living experiment testing the notion that doing good in the world without public recognition is good for the soul. Of course, we all like to be complimented ;), but thats not why we did this. It was, in no small measure, to give us the experience of service and quiet support. Like many of you Rams, we’ve had parent/relative/friend cheerleaders our whole lives and center stage is maybe a little too familiar. This was a way to do something, without a pat on the back. Just as importantly, we believe it would undermine FC’s power to move people if our identities were revealed. It would go from being a transparent vehicle for your compliments to being “so and sos” project. There are millions of people who do small and large kindnesses every day, without the smallest reward. There are thousands who have submitted compliments over the last two years, without any acknowledgement. Our role in facilitating your love is nothing compared to all that you do to support each other. And so, wed like to keep the focus on the acts themselves. We would, however, like to propose a different sort of reveal. Wed like to reveal to all of you today how easy it is for you to change the world. And, how important it is that you do that actively, and in measurable ways. In fact, FC was maintained, during class, on the Ram van, from a study abroad experience, at football games and during late night parties. We did our thing in Howl, on Eddies, in Keating and in our dorm room. Believe us, it was HARD to keep from tearing up in the library as we read and reposted your loving compliments. We barely kept our sh*t together when we read and edited thousands of entries in the uber-loving Senior Project during our own last final exam week. We were always sure you could see our hearts cracking open and spilling out as we came undone by your kindness. We know you can do it. Over the past four years, weve seen you change your respective corners of the world for the better. If you don’t believe it, think about the time you stayed up late with an upset friend, the time you helped a roommate memorize the circulatory system, the mornings you cleaned up puke, and the many times you submitted heartfelt compliments. The power to choose kindness and compassion over evil and hatred - is a power that belongs to you. Finally, while we appreciate the thanks and the kind words...when it comes down to it, the only thanks we really want, is for every graduate, everyone who loves a graduate, and everyone who is part of Fordham, to do one small kindness - without any expectation of acknowledgement, but with the intention of spreading love. It will fill your heart and fortify your soul. We promise. Youve changed our lives, and we are so grateful.
