TO POSTPONE OR NOT TO POSTPONE? Quezon City – The Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas led by its National President, the Hon. Ricojudge Janvier M. Echiverri has consistently supported the call for the postponement of the Synchronized Barangay and SK Elections this coming October 2013 to a much later date. It may be recalled that pending at both Houses of Congress are Senate Bill No . 3296 sponsored by Sen. Ferdinand “Bong Bong” R. Marcos, Jr., Senate Bill No. 3242 sponsored by Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla, and House Bill No. 6316 (in substitution of House Bills No. 4991, 5724, 5991, 6055 and 6072, sponsored by several Congressmen led by the Hon. George P. Arnaiz, Chairman of the Committee on Local Government. Unless otherwise passed into law, the Synchronized Barangay and SK Elections shall be held on 28 October 2013 as mandated by RA 9340. On an important note, the Commission on Elections through the Hon. Chairman Sixto Brillantes has already expressed support for the postponement of the said elections in as much as it will give the COMELEC sufficient time for its preparatory activities for the nationwide conduct of the elections. The interval between the just concluded Mid-Term Elections and the Barangay / SK elections is so close that may result to overlapping activities of the commission. Further, financial considerations are also taken into account. While the President, His Excellency Benigno Simeon Aquino III is of the position that barangay elections must not be postponed unless there are very good reasons to do so. The President emphasized the need to get the mandate of the people periodically. With the new Congress convening next month, it is expected that the pending measures will be re-introduced with the very good reasons.
