PRESS RELEASE Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford Congratulates Winners of the Cream of the Crop Photo Contest SPRINGFIELD—August 13, 2013—Illinois State Treasurer Dan Rutherford congratulates and thanks all participants in the first annual Cream of the Crop Photo Contest. “Agriculture is an essential industry in Illinois,” said Treasurer Rutherford. “My hope is that this contest serves not only a chance for students to challenge their creativity with photography, but also as a way for students to learn more about agriculture. I grew up in an ag community and have always prided myself on being an advocate for the environment and conservation.” Winning photos in this contest are prominently on display in the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office Tent at the 2013 Illinois State Fair in Springfield and will be on display at the Du Quoin State Fair. The photos will also be used for various marketing materials, which were outdated. The Cream of the Crop Photo Contest is a part of the Ag Invest program. Ag Invest helps hundreds of Illinois farmers and agriculture professionals. It is recognized as one of the largest agricultural linked deposit programs in the entire nation. Through this program, the treasurer’s office partners with eligible lenders to offer farmers both annual and long-term, low-interest loans that can used for operating costs, equipment purchases, construction related expenses and livestock purchases. Each contestant was allowed to submit up to two agricultural photos. Members of the treasurer’s Ag Advisory Board selected the winning pictures. “I am proud to say that students from all over the state submitted 132 photos as part of this contest,” said Treasurer Rutherford. “It was inspiring to see the youthful talent and beautiful depictions of agriculture in Illinois.” In the 8-10 age group, Ashley Althaus of Sublette, Illinois took first and second place with the two photos she submitted. And there was a three way tie for third place: Morgan Miller of Rossville, Jordan Smith of Toluca and Spencer Sonnemann of Richmond. In the 11-14 age group, Janet McClure of Decatur won first place. Annie Sholl of Carthage won second and third place with the two photos she submitted. And in the 15-18 age group, Sidney Weth of Normal came in first. Charlee Walker of Paris received second place, and Christian Surtz of Batavia came in third place. “I hope everyone who attends the fair will stop by my official tent to see the different angles of agriculture that were captured by students from across the state as part of this contest,” said Rutherford. “And don’t forget, the Cream of the Crop Photo Contest will be back next summer. Keep your eyes peeled for ideas of different pictures you can submit in 2014.” ###
