TO THE IRRESPONSIBLE GRANDMOTHER AT THE GARRITY WALMART PARKING LOT: You were lucky today--there was a young woman sitting nearby in her car for 25 minutes to keep an eye on your grandchildren, who appeared to be about 3 and 5 years of age and were left in the car alone, while you did your shopping. As I was approaching my car, she called out to me, explained the situation and asked what I thought should be done. As she was calling 911, you casually strolled out to your car with a shopping cart full of groceries. You were right when you said it isnt that hot outside today but if it is 70 outside, it was at least 90 in that car with the windows rolled up. An overheated car was not the only danger you put those children in. Two young children left alone, as they were, are prey to anyone who might come along--especially with the car parked as far from the building as it was. You were lucky that other woman sat there to protect your grandchildren. You are lucky that they were still there and that they were safe from the danger of being locked inside an overheated car or from someone else passing by in the parking lot who could have done them great harm. Someone had great faith in you when entrusting those precious children to your care. I hope in the future, you will honor that trust by being a responsible caregiver. No child should ever be left unattended in a car, no matter what time of year it is.
