TO: Teresa SKINNER No: 8924 BEAUTIFUL DEATH OF THIRD PARTY MEMBER JACK CARROLL Dear Teresa. Below is the content of a letter received from Jack’s sponsor, our member Dolores. Dear Ben, I wanted to share with you the story of my third party member, Jack Carroll, who died of 22 June 2013 (Day of the execution of St John Fisher). Jack fought in World War II in the campaign against the Japanese in Papua New Guinea. It was very tough for these men. Jack had malaria 3 times. On one occasion the men in his battalion walked for 6 weeks without bathing or changing their clothes. Finally they reached an area where they were provided with a shower and a change of clothing. They undressed, leaving their uniforms where they fell, showered, dressed and headed off to their next destination. They walked for hours before they stopped to bed down for the night. Jack put his hand in his pocket only to realise he had left his rosary in his dirty uniform. He picked up his rifle and told his mates: “If I don’t come back you will know what happened to me.” He went back to get his rosary beads which he still used til the day he died. Jack had a great devotion to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. She was all over his house, in every room. When the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was resumed in our Parish in 2012 Jack was part of that first novena and attended at every opportunity. On June 22 he did not turn up for the novena. He used to sit in front of me in the Church and I noticed he was not there. He died that afternoon. The Parish Priest offered Mass for Jack that same evening. After the Mass a lady I did not know came up to me and gave me a sticker for my car. It was a sticker of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. At the funeral the Parish Priest said: “Our Lady of Perpetual Succour was everywhere in Jack’s home. I never went into the bathroom but I am sure she was there too.” I attended the funeral and after the Mass I went up to Father and gave him a surprise. I said: “Father, did you realise today is the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour”. He replied: “No kidding!” I am sure Our Lady arranged that just for Jack – his death on her novena day and his funeral on her Feast Day. As a young soldier Jack loved the Rosary and Our Blessed Mother and both stayed with him all his life until his beautiful death in the arms of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. Sincerely, Dolores Jack was enrolled by Dolores in June 2011 and by the time he died our members had offered 75,000 Masses for the Holy Souls on his behalf.
