TODAY I LIVE Yesterday I thought about the furnace That will blaze me into ash, About the group of freshly bathed Mourners, seated in formation Nothing changed, really, The sky and the tree Didn’t say a word about my passing, Actually, the pond, the oceans, Even the earth didn’t change Its lapping, its unsatisfied hunger No, the only one who changed Was my mother, who passed before me She winced in her sleep, Felt her old placenta pinch And words, they were like bugs Flying about the mortuary, When the Pastor sent me to Roma, To tap dance, on Marble slabs But today I live, so enlightened By the true immense, I live to deep breathe the distance, To smell the living; I am alive today, Simply put, there is nothing better Than being alive © John Martinez 2013 All Rights Reserved
